2026 1/2-Scale Nike Smoke Project Project Wrap Up
The Washington Aerospace Club 1/2-Scale Nike Smoke project was an ambitious effort to design, build, and fly a large composite sounding rocket. Throughout the project, team members gained hands-on experience in fiberglass layups, composite manufacturing, vehicle integration, flight operations, and experimental rocketry. Just as importantly, the project brought together a group of people with a shared passion for aerospace and provided opportunities to learn, collaborate, and build lasting friendships.
SodBlaster's launch day at Camp WAC was filled with excitement as the Nike Smoke was prepared for its first flight. After a busy integration process, the vehicle was transported to the pad and loaded with the same half-scale L motor previously tested by the WARP team. At ignition, the rocket left the rail smoothly and delivered a nearly perfect flight. The vehicle reached an altitude of 2,416 feet AGL and a maximum velocity of 383 mph (Mach 0.5). Recovery occurred within seconds of landing, and the team quickly recovered the rocket due to elevated fire concerns caused by the dry summer conditions in Pasco.
With a successful first flight complete, the team turned its attention to the project's ultimate goal: flying on a WARP-produced methalox O motor at BALLS. After months of preparation, the Nike Smoke returned to the pad for its highest-performance mission. Liftoff was spectacular, and the vehicle accelerated through transonic flight, reaching approximately Mach 1.4 and an altitude of roughly 4,000 feet during powered flight.
Unfortunately, the second flight ended prematurely due to a propulsion system failure. While the loss of the vehicle was disappointing, it provided valuable lessons that will help improve future projects and operations.
In the end, the Nike Smoke project was a tremendous success. The team designed and built a complex composite rocket, achieved a flawless first flight, advanced its technical capabilities, and gained invaluable hands-on experience. Most importantly, the project strengthened the Washington Aerospace Club community, created new friendships, and provided lessons that will benefit future generations of members for years to come.
